Ion Exchange Resin

An ion-exchange resin, also known as an ion-exchange polymer, is a resin or polymer that serves as an ion-exchange medium. It is an insoluble matrix (or support structure) formed from an organic polymer substrate in the shape of small (0.25–0.5 mm radius) microbeads, usually white or yellowish. The beads are usually porous, which means they have a lot of surface area on and inside of them. The process is known as ion exchange because it involves the trapping of ions and the subsequent release of other ions. Ion-exchange resin comes in a variety of forms. Polystyrene sulfonate is the most common commercial resin.
